Two Graham Projects Win Prestigious "Grand" Awards

Building Design & Construction Magazine's 18th Annual Reconstruction Project Awards, published in BD&C's October 2001 Issue, included two high-profile Graham projects. Both won Grand Awards in the competition for buildings that were privately rehabilitated and registered as certified historic structures by the National Register of Historic Places.

The Ritz-Carlton, Philadelphia

A stunning revival of the old Girard Trust Building, the Ritz renovation consists of a rotunda with leaded oculus, plus a 30-story tower with views of historic downtown Philadelphia. Graham replaced 861 tower windows for 330 guest rooms with customized 3474 heavy commercial aluminum windows. Graham modified the window's meeting rail and also the profile of the sash to create a shadow line to match the original window. Each of the double-hung units has insulated glass, a metal frame with a thermal break; and operable sash for cleaning and ventilation. All were factory-finish in an exterior coating to match the olive paint and sheen of the original steel units. A unique perimeter molding or panning adds to the frame depth, without adding to the sight line. Project architects: The Hillier Group, Philadelphia.

The Renaissance Pittsburgh Hotel (Fulton Building)

A spectacular renovation of the former downtown Fulton Building, facing the Allegheny River, the Renaissance Pittsburgh features a seven-story brick arch and lightcourt with copper trim. Graham supplied thermally-improved replacements for the original wood double-hung windows. 1,060 series 2075 single-hung commercial aluminum were customized, including more than 100 with true or simulated radius heads. Custom perimeter moulding matches the sight lines of the original windows. Custom panning systems match the historic building's surrounding brick mould. The windows have side-load sash for easy cleaning and are factory-finished in Sahara Sand. Project architects: J.G. Johnson, Denver.
