Dodge Momentum Index Declines In June

The Dodge Momentum Index decreased by 2.5% in June moving to 197.3. This was down from the revised May score of 202.4. The loss was led by a decline in institutional planning which dropped a significant 10.5%, while commercial planning increased by 3.1%.

Sarah Martin, associate director of forecasting for Dodge Construction Network, cautioned “growth in the commercial segment may be fleeting, as the continued elevation in interest rates and increasingly tight lending standards weigh down the sector in the latter half of the year.”

Jun-23 May-23 % Change
Dodge Momentum Index 197.3 202.4 -2.5%
Commercial Building 222.2 215.6 3.1%
Institutional Building 166.5 186.0 -10.5%

Dodge attributed the institutional losses to a decrease in education and healthcare activity. The increase in commercial planning was centered around data center and hotel projects.

Year over year, The DMI was 25% higher than June of last year with 17% and 39% higher scores for the commercial and institutional components respectively.
